General Surgery Q & A

What Conditions Can I Have Treated with General Surgery?

The family medicine physicians at Weibo Medical Care have special training regarding the diagnosis, operative, and post-operative procedures for a variety of health issues and complications.
They understand your body’s systems and healing processes so they can perform general surgeries such as abscess drainage, lipoma removal, and laceration repairs. These are outpatient procedures that typically don’t require an overnight stay in the hospital.
If your health condition or injury requires more than what general surgery can accommodate, Dr. Zheng refers you to the appropriate specialist so you can be sure you’re getting the most comprehensive care available. In many cases, he and his team can treat conditions related to minor trauma, soft tissue and skin, your abdomen, and endocrine system.

What is a Lipoma?

A soft, rubbery lump of fat that grows in the soft tissue under your skin may be a lipoma. Lipomas often appear in your arms, upper body, or thighs, and are usually no more than two inches wide. They are classified as tumors but are not typically a health threat or cause for concern.

What Causes Lipomas to Form?

A lipoma may sometimes grow after an injury or occur as a side effect of other conditions, but its cause is largely a mystery. For men and women who have a rare condition called Madelung’s disease, lipomas are more common. Unless they cause pain, there isn’t a medical reason to remove them surgically.
You may choose to remove a lipoma with outpatient surgery, especially if it bothers you physically or cosmetically. Dr. Zheng and the other doctors explain the procedure and recovery, so you know what to expect.

What is an Abscess and How is it Drained?

A skin abscess is a mass under your skin that is often the result of an infection. It is usually filled with pus and bacteria and can be very painful to touch. An abscess can occur anywhere on your body, but especially in your armpits, in your groin, or around your anus and genitals.
Because antibiotics don’t always cure an abscess, you may need to have it drained. If left untreated, the infection could spread internally, so it’s important to have Dr. Zheng or one of his colleagues examine it and determine the best treatment option. Dr. Zheng can drain it by inserting a needle or with general surgery.
